Basic Bechamel Sauce (French white sauce)

This quick and easy Bechamel sauce is one of the five mother sauces. It is used for lasagna, mac and cheese, souffles and more.

Bechamel is pretty easy to make and can be used in lots of different ways. I often use it for this lasagna. Add some cheddar or pretty much any kind of cheese you want to this sauce and make mac and cheese.

If you feel intimidated by this sauce, give it a try! I think you’ll see that it’s not that difficult at all.

All you need is:

  • 5 T butter
  • 1/4 c flour
  • 2 c milk
  • 1 t salt
  • 1/4 t pepper
  • 1/8 t nutmeg

Start by getting a medium to large saucepan. Turn the heat on to medium. Add the butter and stir it around, letting it melt. Add the flour and whisk it into the butter until it is smooth and a light sandy color. Add salt and pepper.

Now, increase the heat to medium high, then slowly whisk in the milk. Reduce the heat to medium low, and let it simmer for about 10-15 minutes. It will thicken up to a delicious creamy sauce. Add the nutmeg, stir and you’re done!
